To protect your plumbing during the winter, here are three important steps to take:

  1. Insulate Exposed Pipes: Pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, or garages are vulnerable to freezing. Use pipe insulation or foam pipe covers to protect them. You can also use heat tape, which provides electric heating to keep the pipes warm.

  2. Keep the Heat On: Even if you're away from home, it's essential to keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) to prevent the temperature from dropping too low and freezing pipes. In especially cold climates, consider using a space heater in areas with exposed pipes.

  3. Allow Faucets to Drip: Letting faucets drip, especially those connected to pipes in exterior walls or unheated spaces, helps relieve pressure in the system and reduces the chance of a pipe freezing and bursting. It’s particularly useful in areas prone to extreme cold.

By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of plumbing issues during the winter months.
